Plot

The novel begins with Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist, being invited to join an expedition to investigate a mysterious sea monster that has been terrorizing ships. Aronnax and his companions, Conseil and Ned Land, are taken captive by the monster, which turns out to be the Nautilus, a submarine commanded by Captain Nemo.

Nemo is a enigmatic figure, a brilliant scientist and inventor who has renounced society and lives in the depths of the ocean. He takes Aronnax and his companions on a journey around the world, exploring the wonders of the underwater world. They encounter giant squid, underwater volcanoes, and lost cities.

Aronnax is fascinated by Nemo's knowledge and inventions, but he is also troubled by Nemo's misanthropy. Nemo has seen the horrors of war and has lost faith in humanity. He believes that the only way to escape the evils of the world is to live in isolation in the ocean.

Ned Land, on the other hand, is eager to escape from the Nautilus and return to the surface world. He is frustrated by Nemo's secrecy and his refusal to let them leave. Land eventually leads a mutiny against Nemo, but it is unsuccessful. Nemo escapes, and Aronnax and his companions are left stranded on an island.
