The story of the Unknown Soldier is a moving one, but it is only one of many stories of courage and sacrifice that emerged from World War I. During the war, more than 4 million Americans served in the armed forces, and over 116,000 were killed. Many of these soldiers were awarded medals for their bravery, including the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart.

The following are the stories of some of WWI's most decorated heroes:

  • Alvin York was a farmer from Tennessee who became one of the most decorated soldiers in American history. In October 1918, York led a small group of soldiers in an attack on a German machine gun nest. York killed 25 Germans and captured 132 more. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.
  • Eddie Rickenbacker was a race car driver who became a fighter pilot during WWI. He shot down 26 German planes, making him the leading American ace of the war. Rickenbacker was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, and the Silver Star.
  • Henry Johnson was a private in the 369th Infantry Regiment, a segregated unit of African American soldiers. In May 1918, Johnson and a fellow soldier were attacked by a group of 24 Germans. Johnson fought off the attackers, killing four and wounding several others. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, but it was not until 1996 that he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
  • Joyce Kilmer was a poet and journalist who served as a chaplain's assistant during WWI. He was killed in action in July 1918. Kilmer's poem "Trees" is one of the most famous poems of the war.

These are just a few of the stories of the brave men and women who served in World War I. Their sacrifices helped to ensure the victory of the Allies and the preservation of democracy. We owe them a debt of gratitude that we can never fully repay.

The American Legion

In the years following WWI, many veterans joined the American Legion, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving veterans and their families. The American Legion has played a major role in advocating for veterans' benefits and in promoting patriotism. The organization also provides a variety of programs and services to veterans, including job training, housing assistance, and counseling.

The American Legion is a powerful advocate for veterans, and it has played a major role in shaping veterans' policy in the United States. The organization's work has helped to improve the lives of millions of veterans and their families.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. The tomb is a national memorial to the American servicemen and women who have died in wars without being identified. The tomb is guarded by members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as "The Old Guard."

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a sacred place of remembrance. It is a reminder of the sacrifices that have been made by American servicemen and women throughout our history. The tomb is a symbol of our nation's gratitude and respect for its fallen heroes.

The story of America's Unknown Soldier and WWI's most decorated heroes is a story of courage, sacrifice, and remembrance. These brave men and women fought for our country and for the ideals of democracy. We owe them a debt of gratitude that we can never fully repay.
